The Robert Frederick Smith Prize is the premier award of the Senior Division of the Sphinx Competition, administered by the Sphinx Organization. Established through a major gift from philanthropist Robert F. Smith, the prize recognizes and supports outstanding young Black and Latino classical string musicians (violin, viola, cello, double bass) as they launch and advance their professional careers. In addition to a $50,000 cash award, the prize offers winners career development resources, solo appearances with major orchestras, and access to an influential network in classical music. The competition and prize aim to address systemic barriers and foster greater diversity and representation in the classical music field.
