The Japanese Language Education Assistant Program (JLEAP) places native Japanese Language Assistant Teachers (ATs) in K-12 educational institutions across the United States for up to two years. The program's objective is to strengthen and invigorate Japanese language programs, provide students with authentic language and cultural exposure, and nurture a new generation of qualified Japanese language educators. The Assistant Teacher works alongside a designated Lead Teacher, bringing authentic language skills and serving as a cultural ambassador.
JLEAP is jointly administered by the Japan Foundation Los Angeles (JFLA) and The Laurasian Institution. The program covers the AT’s salary, airfare, living and housing stipends, vehicle/insurance support, and health insurance. Host schools also receive funds to purchase educational materials, making participation cost-effective for institutions seeking to enhance their Japanese language offerings.
