Description
Administered by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) with federal Clean Water Act Section 319 funds, this program supports projects that identify nonpoint source pollution problems and improve water quality. Eligible work includes watershed assessment and planning, implementation of pollution-reduction practices, groundwater protection, and public information and education.
South Dakota gives first consideration to impaired waters with total maximum daily loads (TMDLs). Implementation projects often put best management practices in place following an assessment. Funded projects include public education and, where applicable, water quality monitoring. Approved projects report progress and reductions in sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
