Funding Amounts: No budget cap; budgets must reflect actual project needs. Maximum project period: 5 years. Typical R01 awards range from $250,000–$500,000 direct costs/year.
Summary: Supports research on non-pharmacological interventions to promote sleep health, reduce sleep health disparities, and examine sleep as a modifiable factor to reduce other health disparities in populations experiencing health inequities.
Key Information: Clinical trials are optional; applications must address NIH-designated health disparity populations; foreign organizations are not eligible to apply.
This NIH funding opportunity supports research on non-pharmacological interventions aimed at improving sleep health and reducing sleep health disparities among populations that experience health inequities in the United States and its territories. The initiative also encourages studies examining sleep as a modifiable factor to reduce disparities in other health outcomes (e.g., cardiovascular disease, mental health, cancer, substance use disorders).
Projects should address behavioral, social, environmental, or structural determinants of sleep health, and may include intervention development, adaptation, implementation, and evaluation. Community engagement and multi-level approaches are strongly encouraged. Both clinical trials and non-trial research are eligible.
Participating NIH Institutes include the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), and National Cancer Institute (NCI).
