This fellowship opportunity supports postdoctoral research focused on understanding the solar corona and its role in driving space weather phenomena such as fast and slow solar winds, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs), and solar flares. The research involves developing and utilizing novel remote sensing instruments, including ultraviolet and spectrometric coronagraphs, to observe the Sun’s source regions of space weather. The goal is to improve theoretical and empirical models of plasma processes in the solar corona, enhancing predictive capabilities for space weather impacts on space-based technologies.
Research projects may involve instruments like the Ultraviolet Coronal Spectrometer (UVCS), Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on SOHO, the UVSC Pathfinder, and the planned Extreme Ultraviolet High-Throughput Spectroscopic Telescope (EUVST). The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) offers excellent facilities for instrumentation testing, optical and materials research, and high-performance computing to support these investigations.
