Description
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) supports Specialized Alcohol Research Centers through the P50 mechanism. Centers conduct integrated, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research around a major theme relevant to alcohol misuse, alcohol use disorder (AUD), and associated health consequences across the lifespan. Research may address etiology, genetics, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, alcohol-related end-organ diseases, and biomedical, psychosocial, or population health outcomes.
The program emphasizes understudied or innovative topics, coordination among independent researchers, and development and mentorship of young investigators. Centers should contribute more than the sum of their individual projects, serve as regional and national resources, and build collaborations with outside investigators. Support encompasses basic, developmental, clinical, and applied research, shared resources, and optional pilot projects that introduce new investigators, perspectives, or hypotheses. Clinical trials are optional.
