    Description

The Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology (SAHAT) Grant Program, administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), provides financial support for the development of new assistive technologies that help Veterans and Servicemembers with significant disabilities—such as loss of limb use or blindness—live more independently in specially adapted housing. The program encourages innovation in areas including voice-recognition systems, smart home controls, adaptive equipment, and other novel solutions that address daily living and home adaptation needs for eligible Veterans.

Projects funded under this program have included AI-powered document readers for the blind, thought-based assistive tech for neuromuscular impairments, custom-fit home modification devices, and smart home safety systems. The goal is to advance technologies that directly enhance the quality of life and independence of severely disabled Veterans.
