The State Health Policy Fellowship (SHPF) is a non-partisan program launched by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) to place exceptional early- and mid-career health professionals in state legislative and executive agencies. The fellowship aims to strengthen state-level health policy by providing policymakers with expert analysis and evidence-based guidance, while developing the next generation of health policy leaders. Fellows spend one year, part-time, embedded within state government offices, contributing to the development and implementation of health policies and programs. The experience includes a one-week orientation in Washington, DC, regular virtual learning sessions, cohort state capitol visits, and direct engagement with Congressional delegations. The program is currently in its pilot phase, with partnerships in several states and is open to expansion.
