The Steenbock Professorships are among the most prestigious honors for faculty at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, established in the early 1980s to recognize and support exceptional faculty in the natural sciences. Endowed by Mrs. Evelyn Steenbock in honor of her late husband, Professor Harry Steenbock, these professorships provide substantial, long-term support for research activities and/or released time for research. Awardees are nominated by their departments or by groups of three or more faculty members, with final selection made by an expert committee drawn from U.S. and Canadian universities. Professorships are awarded for a ten-year term, after which a new selection is made.
