--- ## Description The Structural and Architectural Engineering and Materials (SAEM) program aimed to support fundamental research to advance sustainable buildings and other structures that can be continuously occupied or operated throughout their useful life. The program encouraged a holistic approach to the analysis, design, construction, operation, maintenance, retrofit, and repair of structures. Topics of interest included innovative structural and architectural materials, building system reconfigurability, resource efficiency, and resilience. Research priorities included: - Strategies for cost-effective, resource- and energy-efficient structures using sustainable materials and systems. - Mitigation of material and structural deterioration from fatigue, chemical, and environmental factors. - Physics-based computational modeling and simulation to design multifunctional materials and assess performance under service conditions. - Fundamental studies of new sustainable materials, such as bio-inspired materials, recycled/waste-derived materials, low-carbon materials, and smart/adaptive systems. The program encouraged interdisciplinary proposals integrating materials science, mechanics, dynamic systems, architecture, economics, and human factors.
