Summary: Supports scholars conducting research on European painting collections, fostering scholarly exchange between The Met and European institutions.
The Theodore Rousseau Fellowship is designed for scholars whose research projects require travel for close study of painting collections in Europe. Unlike other Met fellowships, it does not require residency at The Met, enabling fellows to engage directly with European works of art, archives, and scholarly communities. Fellows design independent research projects that relate to The Met’s collection while also pursuing complementary research in European painting collections. Each fellow is assigned a Met supervisor for mentorship, and while primarily off-site, fellows may choose to spend some time at The Met if desired. The fellowship aims to strengthen connections between The Met and European institutions and support deep engagement with art and scholarly networks abroad.
