Funder: U.S. National Science Foundation
Due Dates: Proposals accepted anytime
Funding Amounts: Up to $750,000 per award (3 years); estimated total program funding $6,000,000; 5–8 awards annually
Summary: Supports mid-career or later-stage researchers in molecular and cellular biosciences to transition into new research directions via sabbatical/professional development and subsequent lab research.
Key Information: Proposals must include a plan for a significant research transition and are not accepted if focused on disease or therapeutics.
This NSF opportunity, offered by the Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB), is designed to enable mid-career or later-stage researchers (Associate or Full Professor, or equivalent) to pursue a significant new research direction in molecular and cellular biosciences. The award supports a sabbatical or similar professional development period (up to 6 months of PI salary), followed by two years of lab-based research in the new area. The goal is to facilitate the adoption of transformative technologies or approaches not currently accessible in the PI’s environment, thereby enhancing the PI's competitiveness and impact in the field. Highest funding priority is given to proposals with outstanding intellectual merit and broader impacts, particularly those integrating biology with other disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and engineering.
