The Upjohn Research Initiative, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows, funds applied research projects that enhance the value of design and advance professional practice knowledge in architecture. Each year, up to six grants are awarded to innovative projects addressing critical challenges and opportunities in the built environment, such as sustainable materials, climate resilience, building performance, occupant health, equitable communities, and technological innovation. Projects are expected to deliver new tools, guides, or prototypes that are relevant and applicable to practicing architects. Funded research outcomes are published online to contribute to the broader architectural knowledge base.
