The Vanguard Resident Fellowship, part of the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program, is designed to advance the quality of mental and substance use disorder prevention and treatment services, and improve mental health care outcomes nationwide. The program aims to increase both the number and quality of psychiatrists who teach, administer services, conduct research, and provide direct mental and/or substance use disorder services, with a focus on effectively serving populations with a higher prevalence of behavioral health challenges.
Fellows benefit from a $12,500 stipend to support an innovative Capstone Project, professional development sessions, mentorship through the Advocate & Protégé Program, and leadership training via the LEAD Institute. Additional opportunities include participation in national meetings and summits, networking with APA leaders, and engagement in APA governance and advocacy activities. The fellowship is structured to cultivate future leaders in psychiatry who are committed to advancing equity and access in mental health care.
