Summary: Supports select federally recognized Tribes in partnering with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to investigate and prosecute domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, sex trafficking, and stalking in Indian country.
Key Information: Only the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska are eligible to apply.
Description
This initiative provides funding to strengthen the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, sex trafficking, and stalking cases in Indian country. Grant funds are intended to support Tribal prosecutors who are cross-designated as Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs), enabling them to work directly with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices (USAOs). The program aims to:
- Fill gaps in jurisdictional coverage for serious crimes.
- Enhance communication and coordination among Tribal, federal, and state law enforcement.
- Establish consistent relationships between federal prosecutors and Tribal communities.
- Improve the quality of investigations and prosecutions through training and best practices.
The funding supports salary and fringe benefits for a Tribal prosecutor, training, travel, and related resources necessary for the SAUSA's work.
