Description
The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) administers VERP as a permanent competitive grant program to promote housing stability, identify factors contributing to eviction filings, and prevent or divert evictions. The program supports community-based work across Virginia, with expansion to underserved regions, including Northern Virginia, directed for the 2027–2028 cycle.
Grantees combine timely rent and stabilization assistance with proactive outreach, pre-hearing support, court navigation, and connections to wraparound services. They also work with landlords, courts, legal aid, and other community partners to improve local practices that contribute to eviction risk. Limited post-eviction support is optional for qualifying households already engaged with a grantee.
