    Description

This opportunity, offered by the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, aims to advance scientific understanding and restoration of Willow Creek Reservoir in Heppner, Oregon. The project targets significant water quality issues including harmful cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, low dissolved oxygen, and high nutrient concentrations, all of which impact public health, recreation, and ecosystem health.

    The program seeks to:

    • Acquire empirical data and conduct limnological analysis through systematic environmental monitoring and experimental observation.
    • Develop a comprehensive hydrodynamic model to simulate environmental scenarios and forecast water quality trajectories.
    • Evaluate and model mitigation strategies, including the effectiveness of current aeration systems and alternative options.
    • Facilitate transparent dissemination of research outcomes to stakeholders and the public, supporting community-led restoration efforts and regulatory compliance.

The research will directly inform best management practices and support the development of a comprehensive restoration plan for the reservoir.
