Description
The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD), through its Office of Justice Programs, administers this program using federal Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds. It supports intergovernmental cooperation to create new full-time, full-service regional police departments and expand established departments by adding chartered municipalities.
The program aims to improve enforcement consistency, recruitment, personnel deployment, training efficiency, career opportunities, and professionalism while reducing long-term costs. Supported work includes equipment standardization, legal work associated with regionalization, accreditation, diversity training, recruitment, temporary staffing, and rebranding. New departments may also receive limited support for police chief salary and benefits. Expected impacts include better police coverage, training opportunities, and technology use.
