Description
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), within the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs, funds jurisdictions to establish or enhance family treatment courts. These courts serve parents who need substance use disorder treatment and are involved in the child welfare system because of child abuse, neglect, or other parenting issues. Courts provide intensive judicial monitoring and interventions for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.
The program supports screening, assessment, case management, recovery support, and program coordination. Its goals include protecting children, safely reunifying families, strengthening parent-child relationships, and expediting permanency. It also promotes cross-system collaboration involving families and youth with lived expertise, justice agencies, treatment providers, child protective agencies, social services, community health agencies, and community-based organizations.
