The Barlow Prize is the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition’s international commission for an individual composer, with a different genre designated each year. The 2027 competition supports a new work for brass quintet. Established at Brigham Young University in 1984 through the generosity of Milton A. and Gloria Barlow, the Endowment fosters the creation and performance of contemporary classical music.
The competition welcomes composers from varied musical aesthetics and backgrounds, without preferences for a particular musical style. Applicants submit existing scores and recordings demonstrating their compositional abilities rather than an already-started commissioned work. The Endowment’s Board of Advisors and guest judges representing performer perspectives assess submissions. The panel may choose not to award the Prize if no applicant merits it.
