The ASCENT Consortium’s Research Scholar Award supports early-career investigators developing independent research careers in palliative care. It addresses limited training opportunities by providing protected time, mentorship, career development, and support for research activities. The goal is to help scholars become competitive for larger, extramurally funded awards while strengthening the palliative care research workforce across institutions and geographic locations.
Projects must address seriously ill patients, professional or family/lay caregivers, or both, and align with at least one ASCENT priority area. Supported approaches include clinical trials, observational studies, secondary data analyses, health services research, qualitative research, and mixed methods. Projects may focus on a particular age group rather than the entire lifespan, including populations with disproportionately high palliative care needs or barriers to accessing services.
