The AABB Foundation Cord Blood Research Grant supports original, investigator-initiated projects with the potential to make significant contributions to basic, translational, or clinical research. The program focuses on the biology, manufacturing, and banking of cord blood and cord tissue-derived products and therapeutics.
Supported research spans umbilical cord blood transplantation, strategies to mitigate graft-versus-host disease, and regenerative medicine, including non-hematologic uses of cord blood stem cells to regenerate damaged tissues. Other areas include cord blood-derived cell therapy, cellular immunotherapy, banking studies, gene therapy, and ex vivo expansion. Transplantation applications include blood cancers, bone marrow failure syndromes, congenital immunodeficiency syndromes, inherited leukodystrophies, and genetic blood disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
