Funded through a bequest from Aina Birnitis, a librarian who lived in Carlton, Australia, it encourages timely completion of humanities dissertations related to Latvia or Latvians.
Preference is given to Latvian language and history. Other eligible fields include anthropology, archaeology, ethnography, fine and performing arts, folklore, gender studies, linguistics, literature, philosophy, and religion. Social sciences—including economics, sociology, and political science—as well as law and international relations qualify only when clearly cultural or historical in content and focus. Selection emphasizes scholarly merit, a clear intellectual agenda, appropriate methodology, and the likelihood of dissertation completion and continued residence in Latvia.
