The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM), supported by the AAFP Foundation, awards an annual grant for oral history interviews documenting the history of family medicine in the United States. The program supports serious research that uses oral history as a principal source, offers fresh perspectives, and expands the Center’s oral history collection. It encourages involvement by researchers, family physicians, medical students, and family medicine residents.
The program seeks to advance understanding and appreciation of family medicine’s history while reflecting the diversity of the specialty and the patients it serves. Funded work may explore perspectives beyond physicians’ clinical roles, including their families and communities. Selection emphasizes significant research, original approaches, clear proposals, and the feasibility of completing the interviews within the proposed project timeline.
