The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM) sponsors this annual AAFP Foundation contest to encourage medical students and family medicine residents to write scholarly essays about the history of family medicine in the United States. Subjects may have national, state, or local relevance, including the specialty’s development, an individual’s contributions, medical or medical-political controversies, and the effects of social or political change.
The contest also welcomes accounts of family physicians’ day-to-day work, including narratives, reminiscences, and interpretations of diaries, as well as studies of responses to diseases, medical conditions, or public health problems. CHFM seeks to develop historical scholarship by writers who reflect the diversity of the specialty and the patients it serves.
