Sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), the Medical Student Essay Award aims to stimulate interest in neurology as an exciting and challenging profession. It recognizes engaging, original writing that makes a neurology topic accessible to general neurologists, rather than research manuscripts or personal statements. Essays may take the form of historical discussion, reflection, fiction, poetry, or another concise piece.
Suggested subjects include equity, diversity, and inclusion; notable researchers or neurologists; innovations in neurology; community service; global health; education; and commentary on current or historical research. AAN physician and scientist members judge the essays for writing quality, creativity, and relevance to neurologists. Selected essays are showcased on the AAN website.
