The AATS Foundation Resident Surgical Investigator Program supports residents pursuing careers in cardiothoracic surgery through mentored research experiences. Residents conduct research in the laboratory of an established surgical investigator, combining scientific work with dedicated mentorship and professional development. The program aims to advance scientific discovery and innovation while developing future cardiothoracic surgeon-investigators and leaders in academic cardiothoracic surgery.
The training environment includes laboratory experience, a didactic curriculum, and mentoring and career counseling. Related cardiac and thoracic awards support clinical and translational research, including quality and outcomes studies and innovative therapies, procedures, and technologies. The David J. Sugarbaker award focuses on thoracic surgical oncology, with particular interest in mesothelioma and lung cancer.
