The American Board of Medical Specialties Research and Education Foundation (ABMS REF) funds investigator-driven research supporting ABMS’s mission to improve health care through high standards for physician board certification. Projects may address initial or continuing certification across any of the 24 ABMS Member Boards. Both research and program evaluation are supported, with preference for evaluations producing insights beyond their local setting.
Topics include certification’s effects on public health and health care disparities, equity in assessment, technology in certification, alignment with evolving health care delivery, and competency-based education. These examples do not limit the program’s scope. The program promotes independent findings, collaboration with Member Boards, and a community of research practice involving grantees and ABMS Scholars. Projects relevant to multiple Member Boards receive priority.
