The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Scholars Program is a year-long, part-time research and leadership-development program for early-career physicians and researchers. It supports original research or established projects with a new scope of work that advance the ABMS mission and align with priorities of the ABMS Research and Education Foundation (ABMS REF) or co-sponsoring ABMS Member Boards.
Scholars remain at their home institutions and work with self-selected mentors while learning from experts in certification, research, and data science, and national leaders in medical education and health policy. The program connects participants with peers, mentors, and scholar alumni. Its research contributions address certification, quality improvement, medical education, racial equity, diagnostic excellence, and patient care, while helping scholars develop as leaders within and across the certification community.
