The Australian Academy of Science’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist Award recognises outstanding research in the physical and biological sciences by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander PhD students and early- and mid-career scientists. Its scope includes interdisciplinary and sociocultural research overlapping with the social sciences and humanities. The award supports research activities, international research visits, network growth and knowledge exchange, with additional support to attend Science at the Shine Dome.
Cultural connectedness and community benefit are central assessment priorities. Proposals should explain how the research aligns with the cultural interests of the communities involved and benefits Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Benefits may be direct, including health, environmental, cultural or fiscal outcomes, or indirect through advocacy encouraging First Nations youth to pursue STEM careers or develop research capacity.
