The Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowships honor poets of literary merit appointed to civic positions and support both their artistic practice and community-facing poetry projects. Established in 2019 in partnership with the Mellon Foundation, the program enables poets to create new work while undertaking meaningful, impactful, and innovative activities that enrich the lives of their neighbors, including youth.
The program brings together poetry and civic engagement through responsive, interactive projects addressing important statewide or local issues and/or engaging young people. Supported work has included workshops, public poetry installations, festivals, local poetry archives, school programs, and poetry hotlines. Selection considers the proposed project's concept, scope, components, depth, geographic reach, and community support.
