The Design History Society’s Accessible Design History Grant helps remove structural barriers that prevent disabled researchers, students, and practitioners from participating fully in design history. It recognises that access needs differ and provides concrete support to make research spaces, events, and resources more accessible. Members may apply for their own disability-related needs or to create access for disabled colleagues, collaborators, or participants.
Supported costs include assistive technology, software and equipment, additional research or travel costs arising from disability or mobility needs, personal assistance or care during conferences and fieldwork, sign language interpreters, and captioning. The programme prioritises equity, accessibility, and inclusion, particularly for design historians experiencing intersecting forms of marginalisation, and encourages environmentally conscious research and participation.
