Description
The UW Department of Family Medicine and Community Health offers a one-year Addiction Medicine Fellowship providing clinical experience and instruction in managing substance use disorders. Established in 2010, the accredited program prepares physicians to sit for the addiction medicine board certification exam. Training emphasizes evidence-based treatment, integration of addiction medicine into primary care, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and counseling to support recovery.
Fellows work across hospital and outpatient settings, treating substance use disorders alongside co-occurring illness, acute withdrawal and intoxication, chronic pain, and HIV. Clinical experiences include hospital consultation, a low-barrier outpatient clinic, opioid treatment programs, student health services, and an alcohol-related liver disease clinic. The curriculum also offers teaching, scholarly presentations, an optional research elective, and opportunities in advocacy, health policy, and community partnerships.
