The European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant provides substantial long-term funding to established, leading principal investigators (PIs) who have a track record of significant research achievements. The grant is designed to enable these research leaders to pursue innovative, high-risk/high-gain projects at the frontiers of knowledge in any scientific field. Grants are awarded to individual PIs hosted by public or private research organizations (host institutions) located in European Union (EU) Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries.
The scheme operates on a bottom-up basis, with no predetermined research priorities, and is open to all disciplines. The sole criterion for selection is scientific excellence, both of the PI and the proposed project. The evaluation process is highly competitive and includes a rigorous peer review.
