Description
The Washington State Department of Ecology’s Toxics Cleanup Program runs this competitive grant program to help turn contaminated sites into affordable housing. Cleanup grants can fund remedial action costs, including environmental site assessments, remedial investigations, feasibility studies, interim actions, cleanup design and construction, site planning, and community involvement. The program also offers separate planning grants.
Ecology aims to accelerate cleanup and redevelopment while reducing the effect of cleanup costs on affordable housing projects. Its priorities include cleaning sites for residential use, involving communities in cleanup decisions, serving areas with high housing need near transit and services, and reducing displacement. Ecology is proposing changes to the program for the 2027–29 biennium.
