The African Studies Association’s Junior Scholar Professional Development Grant supports junior scholar members at U.S. institutions pursuing opportunities to develop professionally. Established in 2025 by the ASA Board of Directors under the Directors’ Fund, the program competitively selects scholars for funding that facilitates conference attendance, research travel, workshop or event attendance, language immersion, and other professional development opportunities.
The program prioritizes applications from junior scholars at non-R1 institutions. Its scope extends beyond the listed activities to other professional development experiences, provided the supported opportunities take place within 12 months of receiving the grant. Recipients also document the grant’s impact on their professional development through a written article.
