    Description

Established in 2010, the African Studies Association’s Presidential Fellowships support scholarly exchange for Africa-based scholars and practitioners with an intellectual interest in Africa. Fellows attend the ASA Annual Meeting and visit US institutions of higher learning immediately before or after the conference. These visits provide opportunities to present research, engage with academics working on Africa-related issues, form networks, and explore collaboration.

The program combines fellowships supported by ASA and member contributions with named fellowships backed by sponsors or donors. The ASA Samora & Graça Machel Presidential Fellows Fund supports annual fellowships in the humanities and social sciences. Established in 2024 through a gift from Allen and Barbara Isaacman, the fund honors the Mozambican leaders and activists Samora and Graça Machel. Hosting and conference mentoring are central to the fellowship experience.
