African Visiting Scholars supports original, independent or interdisciplinary research using the Field Museum’s collections under the guidance of Museum scientists. Run by the Science and Scholarship Funding Committee, the program was established in honor of Bill Stanley and is supported by the Bill Stanley Memorial Fund. The 2027 call emphasizes innovative work with specimens and data relevant to African biodiversity, culture, geology, and conservation, including reexamination of historic African material.
The program gives African scientists opportunities to develop research skills and strengthen connections between the Museum and African institutions. Projects should generate new insights while contributing to collection development, conservation, capacity building, or future collaborative initiatives. Visits also support skills and relationships that awardees can bring to research and training at home.
