The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), with support from the Aman Armaan Ahmed Family, offers summer undergraduate research fellowships to students from groups traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research. Fellows undertake 10 weeks of digestive disease research under investigators in gastroenterology and hepatology, with opportunities to learn about future training and career options. The program aims to encourage careers in science, medicine, and basic or clinical digestive disease research, expanding the pipeline of investigators from diverse backgrounds.
Participating mentors offer projects involving gut tissue biomechanics, enteric neurons and glial cells, gut–brain interactions, gastrointestinal motility, and inflammatory bowel disease. Depending on the project, students may gain experience in imaging, molecular biology, cell culture, genomics analysis, or clinical data collection, alongside experimental design, scientific presentations, and manuscript preparation.
