Funding Amounts: Up to $10,000 for a one-year research project
Summary: Supports gemologists and scientists worldwide conducting scientific research on gemstones, their treatments, origins, and properties.
Key Information: Applicants must have an established relationship with a gem research laboratory or scientific institute.
The Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) provides financial and intellectual support for scientific research in or directly related to gemology. The program supports individuals worldwide and advances AGA’s mission to encourage gemological education and research. Its Educational Scholarship and Research Grant Committee (ESRGC) reviews proposals, with awards authorized by the AGA Board of Governors.
Supported work has investigated the relationship between origin and luminescence in grossular garnets, treatment and origin determination in rubies and sapphires, and the origin of color in diamonds. These studies address gaps in understanding gemstone treatments and properties, with potential benefits for testing accuracy and consistency between laboratories. AGA also emphasizes independent research and collaboration with scientific institutions, with findings shared through presentations and published papers.
