The American Gastroenterological Association’s Young Guts Scholars Program supports undergraduate students from racial, ethnic and other groups traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research. Supported by the Dr. Harvey Young Education & Development Foundation, it aims to encourage careers in science or medicine and expand the pipeline of digestive disease investigators.
Students work with mentors on digestive disease research throughout the academic year, participating in proposal development and completing a defined portion of the proposed work. The 10-month experience combines research support with AGA student membership and a travel allowance for Digestive Disease Week®. Selection emphasizes students’ research interests, engagement with their proposal and mentor, demonstrated need, and likelihood of benefiting from the experience.
