The Ahmanson Predoctoral Fellowship, administered by UCLA’s Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies, supports doctoral candidates whose dissertations benefit from sustained research with the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library’s collections. It combines nine months of dissertation research with participation in the Center’s yearlong Core Program and scholarly events.
The 2027–28 Core Program, Federations in Historical Perspective, examines federation as a framework for shared collective governance, from ancient and medieval republics through early modern empires, revolutions, and decolonization. It explores how federal models distributed authority, managed populations, stabilized post-imperial spaces, restrained hegemonic power, and protected regional liberties. Organized by UCLA professors Stella Ghervas, Anthony Pagden, and Tejas Parasher, the program reconsiders relationships between political modernity, nationalism, and statehood.
