The American Hand Therapy Foundation (AHTF) supports scientific clinical research that advances practice in hand and upper limb rehabilitation. Established in 1993 in honor of Dr. William Burkhalter, a long-time advocate for hand therapy, the grant receives support from the Doris Ann Slack Upper Extremity Education and Research Innovation Fund. Preference is given to novice investigators or novice clinicians.
The program considers experimental, non-experimental, pilot, quasi-experimental, measurement, and qualitative studies within categories identified by AHTF research priorities. Past funded work includes development of a patient-reported outcome measure for brachial plexus injuries, a pilot study of observed thumb metacarpophalangeal collapse, and research on lifelong participation in adults with upper limb conditions.
