Milek Fellowship supports non-tenured university faculty researching steel design and construction while developing students, especially doctoral researchers, for the U.S. structural steel industry.
Funder: American Institute of Steel Construction
Due Dates (Anticipated): September 2027 (2028 Milek Program application deadline)
Funding Amounts: $75,000 per year for four years
Summary: Supports non-tenured university faculty conducting steel design and construction research while developing students for the U.S. structural steel industry.
Key Information: Fellows must support promising students and should strive to devote at least half the fellowship funding to a doctoral candidate.
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) selects a promising non-tenured university faculty member each year as the Milek Fellow. The fellowship supports research across a wide array of topics in steel design and construction, with a central goal of developing students who can become valuable contributors to the U.S. structural steel construction industry. Doctoral research receives particular emphasis.
Formerly the AISC Faculty Fellowship, the program was renamed to honor William A. Milek Jr., AISC’s former Vice President of Engineering and Research. Supported projects have addressed braced-frame safety and efficiency, welding preheat temperatures, automated structural design, additive manufacturing, and adhesive steel-to-steel connections. Other research has explored bridge decks, seismic behavior, fire protection, flooring systems, and cross-section stability.
