Summary: Supports structural steel research advancing design and construction performance, safety, sustainability, and life-cycle economy.
Key Information: Research results are intended for academic, standards-development, and industry use, with final reports published publicly.
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) funds research related to structural steel design and construction, with goals and areas of interest established by its Committee on Research. The program seeks next-generation structural steel systems that improve performance, safety, sustainability, and economy, including life-cycle costs. Research on steel under high wind, earthquake, blast, and fire loading is also encouraged.
Areas of interest include performance-based design, advanced materials and technologies, innovative connections, analytical simulation through failure, and complete three-dimensional structural systems. AISC also welcomes work on floor systems, high-rise framing, lateral bracing, building-envelope integration through building information modeling, sustainable construction, and resistance to unanticipated loads and disproportionate collapse. Joint sponsorship with government or private funding agencies and collaboration among institutions and researchers are encouraged.
