Description
The Alabama Coastal Area Management Program has worked since 1979 to preserve, enhance, and develop Alabama’s coastal lands and waters for present and future generations. It is a joint effort of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ State Lands Division. The State Lands Division leads planning and policy development; ADEM handles permitting, monitoring, and enforcement.
ADEM also conducts coastal resource studies and a coastal watershed survey, implements the Alabama Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program, and provides local governments with funding and technical assistance on coastal resource management issues. The program reviews activities that may affect beaches, dunes, wetlands, water bottoms, and other coastal resources.
