The Alaska Literary Awards, established by the Alaska Arts and Culture Foundation and administered by the Alaska State Council on the Arts, recognize and support Alaskan writers working in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and mixed genres. The primary criterion for selection is the quality of the submitted work. The awards are intended to advance the careers of Alaska-based literary artists and are made possible by a generous donation from Peggy Shumaker and Joe Usibelli. There are no restrictions on how recipients may use their awards, and no formal reporting is required beyond a brief description of how the award supported the recipient's work.
