Description
The Alaska Literary Awards recognize and support literary artists living in Alaska and pursuing their writing on an ongoing basis. Established in 2014 by the Alaska Arts and Culture Foundation through a gift from Peggy Shumaker and Joe Usibelli, the program is administered by the Alaska State Council on the Arts. It supports poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and mixed genres.
Literary quality, demonstrated through submitted work samples, is the primary consideration. Reviewers also consider applicants’ artistic activity and focus, and how the award would advance their literary careers. The awards provide support to writers rather than funding a prescribed project, with no restrictions on how recipients use the award.
