Summary: Paid placements help graduate students and recent graduates launch careers in Alaska’s marine, coastal, and watershed science and policy.
Key Information: Fellows must reside in Alaska and commit to 12 months of full-time work.
Alaska Sea Grant’s State Fellowship Program matches soon-to-graduate and recently finished graduate students with Alaska-based state, federal, and tribal agencies or nonprofit organizations. Modeled after the Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship, it offers on-the-job experience in planning and implementing natural resource policies and programs. The program aims to strengthen the workforce dedicated to healthy fisheries, coastal environments, and watersheds while encouraging early or shifting-career professionals to launch careers in Alaska.
Fellows participate in their hosts’ work as full-time professional staff. Hosts provide supervision and mentoring aligned with fellows’ professional goals, while Alaska Sea Grant supports the cohort, coordinates fellowship-related travel, and leads monthly meetings. This is a professional placement opportunity, not funding for a master’s or doctoral research project or a traditional postdoctoral appointment.
