Summary: Fellowships support seasoned journalists pursuing in-depth, U.S.-focused investigative reporting for print or online publication.
Key Information: Fellows may work part-time or freelance, but cannot hold another full-time job during the fellowship.
The Alicia Patterson Fellowships, administered by the Fund for Investigative Journalism, support significant, in-depth written reporting on U.S.-focused subjects of public interest. Projects may address any public-interest topic, but must have an investigative or accountability focus and advance existing knowledge and coverage of the issue. The program is intended for seasoned reporters who have already published a body of relevant written work.
Six- and 12-month fellowships provide support for reporting and living expenses while journalists research, report and write a series of articles for U.S. outlets. Recent fellows have covered migrant abuse, real estate discrimination, police brutality, climate vulnerability in Black neighborhoods, and epigenetics. Established in honor of Alicia Patterson, Newsday’s founding editor and publisher, the program moved to the Fund after the Alicia Patterson Foundation closed and merged into it at the end of 2025.
