Description
The Fulbright Scholar Program supports scholars in all academic disciplines who combine teaching with research in Japan. Scholars teach two undergraduate or graduate courses per semester in their specialization, coordinated with their host university. This reduced teaching load provides time for a research project within the scholar’s expertise. Responsibilities also include student advising or mentoring and assistance with faculty, curriculum, or program development. The Japan-U.S. Educational Commission finalizes institutional affiliations.
The award promotes international understanding and cooperation through academic exchange and engagement with Japanese society. Applicants must have interests in Japanese culture and society beyond their proposed field. Preference generally goes to plans that further mutual understanding and cooperative pursuits between Japan and the United States. Scholars may also be asked to give public talks and engage with their host communities.
